Research Interests

My main research interests lie in the fields of evolution, marine ecology and, more generally, Earth System Science. As part of the ADAM project, a large part of my PhD has focussed on trying to build adaptation into an individual based marine ecosystem model. Early work has concentrated on the Archaean, looking at potentially viable metabolisms around the time of the Great Oxidation (circa 2.4 billion years ago). Later it is hoped to introduce a second trophic level to the model, before going on to look at trade offs in various physiological parameterizations associated with modern phytoplankton functional types. Questions regarding the introduction of penalty functions to global marine ecosystem models, as well as the potential of organisms to adapt to changing climatic conditions, e.g., ocean acidification in a high CO2 world, will be addressed.
