I am a volcanologist and a Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sciences. While researching physical aspects of volcanic systems I also became very interested in the human dimension of volcanic crises, particularly the thorny issue of encouraging risk reducing behaviour. I have been lucky enough to work with some talented PhD students on this topic, looking at the process of risk communication and issues which affect behaviour during and around volcanic activity.

I am currently a member of the SPIDER network (Science and Policy Interfaces for Disaster Reduction). The website for this Network (open to all interested) can be found at www.spidernetwork.org. I am also a member of the UK Dust Network in a similar vein. At the moment I have two PhD students:

• Sian Crosweller working on Volcanic Risk Communication in St. Vincent and Dominica with Peter Simmons and Richie Robertson from the Seismic Research Unit of the University of the West Indies

• Amii Darnell working on the Use of GIS in Communicating Volcanic Hazards with Andrew Lovett.

I also still have a close interest in risk communications around the active Soufriere Hills Volcano on Montserrat, working in collaboration with Kat Haynes, now a Research Fellow at the Centre for Risk and Community Safety, RMIT University Melbourne and Risk Frontiers, Macquarie University, Australia.
