First comparison of bin and modal aerosol schemes
An important feature of GLOMAP is the ability to run bin and modal aerosol schemes within the same transport model. The bin scheme ought to capture the details of the particle size distribution better than the modal scheme. But ultimately we need to use the modal scheme in the climate model so it needs to be as realistic as possible.
Graham Mann and Dominick Spracklen have been comparing the GLOMAP-bin and -mode versions. First results look encouraging. The figure shows number size distributions for the bin scheme (red) and modal scheme (black) at several global locations.
